“We were shocked,” said Gail Platt and Mat Stanton as they described their emotions when they received the Volunteers Extraordinaire Certificate of Achievement from the TrekNorth Nordic Ski Coaches, Michael Meehlhause and Robert Saxton.
Mat and Gail, have worked at TrekNorth for two years cleaning common rooms and helping students stay on track with their sports practices.
“We want to help the kids stay 100%,” said Gail. “We want the students to be careful and to feel like they do not have to hide injuries in front of their fellow students. So if one is limping, we sit them down and make sure they are ok to practice.”
Mat and Gail have helped with soccer, track and field, cross country and the ski team.
“These teams act like family,” Gail and Mat said. “One of the captains became injured this year and she was really down. We sat down with her and explained that even though she could not play, she was a senior and could give advice to her younger teammates. It seemed to help!”
Mat and Gail appreciate the opportunity ODC has given them to work at TrekNorth.
“Because of ODC we have had the chance to learn how to clean and to work on our temperament,” Gail and Mat said. “ We are really appreciative the job and the communication we have with our job coach.”
Gail and Mat are able to live independently and are looking forward to having the ability to work without the support of a job coach.
Great job Gail and Mat. Keep up the great work!
